Meaning
International barcode quality standards use quantitative metrics to evaluate the readability of printed symbols by automated scanners. The ISO 15416 symbol contrast is the difference between the highest and lowest reflectance values in a barcode’s scan reflectance profile, representing the clarity of the distinction between the dark bars and light spaces. This measurement determines whether a scanner can successfully resolve the barcode pattern.
It applies exclusively to linear, one-dimensional barcodes.
Reflectance Profile
Scanner lasers rely on a sharp transition between light and dark surfaces to decode information. The scan profile records the percentage of light returned to the receiver as it sweeps across the symbol. A high-contrast symbol has very bright spaces and very dark bars, creating a clear waveform that is easy for the decoder to interpret.
If the difference in reflectance is too small, the scanner cannot reliably distinguish the elements of the code, which leads to a scan failure.
Scanner Performance
Distribution facilities use automated sorting systems that depend on high-speed barcode reading. If the symbol contrast falls below the minimum required grade, packages must be manually sorted, which slows down operations and increases labor costs. This operational impact makes the contrast metric a primary focus of vendor compliance programs.
Print Quality
Industrial printers must maintain their ink levels and printhead cleanliness to ensure high contrast. If ink ribbon is depleted or if printhead elements fail, the printed bars will appear faded or streaked, lowering the symbol contrast. Regular testing with a barcode verifier helps prevent this issue before labels are applied to shipments.
