Meaning
Financial institution or licensed service provider that maintains the merchant relationship and processes credit or debit card transactions on behalf of a business. A merchant acquirer entity sits between the retail storefront and the card networks, providing the necessary infrastructure to authorize and settle electronic payments. It takes on the financial risk of the merchant, including the potential for chargebacks or insolvency.
Operational Role
Settlement involves the merchant acquirer entity receiving funds from the issuing bank and depositing them into the merchant’s account after deducting fees. During the authorization phase, the acquirer routes the transaction data to the relevant network, such as Visa or Mastercard, for approval. They also provide the hardware or software interfaces used at the point of sale.
If a customer disputes a charge, the merchant acquirer entity manages the communication between the cardholder bank and the seller.
Risk Management
Underwriting teams evaluate the business model and financial stability of a client before offering processing services. Because the merchant acquirer entity is liable for the funds if a merchant fails to deliver goods, they may require a cash reserve or a rolling hold on a portion of the sales. High risk industries like travel or software often face stricter terms and higher per transaction costs.
Regulatory Compliance
Strict adherence to data security standards is required to prevent the theft of sensitive cardholder information.
