Meaning
Standard ratios used to calculate the billable weight of agricultural or mineral commodities based on their water content ensure that buyers do not pay for excess moisture. In bulk distribution agreements, a moisture adjustment factor adjusts the physical weight of a shipment to match a standardized dryness level. This correction is essential because commodities can absorb significant water during storage or transport, artificially increasing their measured weight.
Calculation Method
The formula measures the actual moisture percentage of a sample taken at the loading dock and compares it to the standard reference percentage. If the water content is higher than the standard, the billable weight is reduced by a proportional percentage to reflect the dry weight of the product. Conversely, very dry shipments may receive a upward weight adjustment to reward the supplier for high density.
Contractual Clause
Bulk supply contracts specify the testing protocols and the adjustment ratios to be used at the point of delivery. These terms outline which laboratory methods will be used to determine the water percentage and who bears the cost of the testing. By agreeing on these procedures, both parties avoid costly legal disputes over weight discrepancies caused by weather conditions during shipping.
Measurement Range
The adjustment only applies to shipments that fall within a pre-determined moisture range, and any material exceeding the maximum limit may be rejected entirely.
