Meaning
Thermal storage substances absorb, store and release large amounts of latent heat at defined transition temperatures while shifting between solid, liquid, or gaseous physical states. In temperature-controlled packaging and pharmaceutical logistics agreements, phase change materials serve as engineered thermal buffers designed to shield sensitive payloads from external weather swings during transit. The functional boundary applies during the phase transition window and terminates once the material completes its phase change and reverts to sensible heating or cooling.
Thermodynamic Function
Organic paraffins, salt hydrates and bio-based fatty acids are formulated to freeze and melt at specific target thresholds such as minus twenty, plus five, or plus twenty degrees Celsius. When external ambient heat penetrates a shipping container, the material absorbs this energy to fuel its melting process, maintaining a steady internal payload temperature. Conversely, falling ambient conditions cause the liquid material to freeze, releasing latent heat and preventing cargo freezing.
Commercial Procurement
Supply contracts for thermal packaging specify material composition, latent heat capacity, encapsulation durability and thermal cycle life. Shippers require pack-out validation certificates demonstrating that cooling packs withstand repeated transit stress without leakage or degradation of thermal capacity. Master supply agreements mandate that suppliers provide non-hazardous, chemically stable materials that comply with airline transport safety rules and packaging disposal regulations.
Testing Standards
Quality departments evaluate material performance using differential scanning calorimetry to verify exact melting points and enthalpy values across production lots. Packaging engineers conduct stress tests inside environmental chambers, exposing loaded thermal shippers to violent external temperature swings. Regulatory release requires clear evidence that the thermal packs maintain target internal conditions throughout the entire validated transit duration.
