Meaning
A solid-state transducer that utilizes the change in electrical resistance of a semiconductor material under mechanical stress to measure physical pressure. Incorporating a piezoresistive sensor into an industrial instrument provides a highly sensitive and compact solution for monitoring process pressures. This technology is widely deployed across automotive, aerospace, and medical device manufacturing.
Sensing Element
The active component consists of resistive elements diffused into a silicon diaphragm that deforms when pressure is applied. This deformation changes the resistivity of the silicon, altering the output voltage of a connected measurement bridge. This system provides a high signal output for small physical deformations.
Thermal Influence
Silicon resistors are sensitive to temperature changes, which can introduce measurement errors if left uncompensated. Design engineers include compensation circuitry or software algorithms to correct for these thermal variations. It ensures that pressure readings remain accurate across the full operating range.
Industrial Use
Robust and chemical-resistant packaging is required to shield the silicon chip from corrosive or high-temperature process fluids. Typically, a flexible stainless steel isolation diaphragm separates the sensor from the process media, using silicone oil to transmit the pressure to the sensing element. This mechanical isolation protects the delicate electronic components while maintaining excellent pressure sensitivity.
It extends the operating life of the device in harsh factory environments.
