Meaning
Renewable energy purchasing agreements frequently employ financial derivatives to hedge electricity costs without taking physical delivery of the power. Proxy off-take is a contractual arrangement where a buyer agrees to purchase a set volume of electricity at a fixed price, but the transaction is settled financially based on a calculated proxy generation profile rather than actual metered output. This structure isolates the buyer from the operational risks of the generating facility.
Contractual Structure
Corporate buyers use these financial structures to achieve their sustainability targets while avoiding the complexities of physical grid management. Under a proxy off-take agreement, the buyer pays the producer a fixed price for each megawatt-hour generated according to the proxy model. In return, the buyer receives the market revenue generated by that simulated output on the spot market.
Financial Settlement
The proxy generation profile is calculated using historical weather data and the technical specifications of the power plant. This calculation removes the generator’s operating efficiency and downtime from the settlement equation. This encourages the operator to maintain the facility in peak condition to maximize their actual output over the proxy level.
Project Financing
Lenders prefer these agreements because they provide a highly predictable revenue stream that is independent of short-term operational glitches. The fixed pricing secures the cash flows needed to service the project’s debt. This facilitates the construction of new renewable assets.
