Meaning
A point of service accepts queries using a standardized graph query language and returns results, enabling direct access to structured database content. Enterprise catalogs use sparql endpoints to allow authorized external partners to retrieve real-time product information, such as stock levels and pricing. This interface governs how data is queried and retrieved across different linked database systems.
It does not apply to REST APIs that use JSON or XML formats for non-graph databases.
Real Time Data
Distributors need access to the most up-to-date pricing and availability data to avoid selling out-of-stock items to critical corporate clients. Operating sparql endpoints allows manufacturers to share this dynamic data directly with their distribution network. This real-time access ensures that the prices displayed on the distributor’s website match the manufacturer’s current list prices.
It reduces the occurrence of pricing disputes and order cancellations, improving the overall efficiency of the channel.
Operational Control
Traditional file-based catalog updates are slow and often lead to data discrepancies between the manufacturer’s database and the distributor’s platform. By providing access to the data through sparql endpoints, the manufacturer maintains control over their master data while allowing partners to run specific queries as needed. This setup eliminates the need to send large, manual file updates each week.
It reduces the administrative burden on both parties and ensures that all partners are working with the same, accurate information.
Licensing Agreements
When a manufacturer allows a distributor to access their product data via these query points, the licensing agreement must define the scope of access. The contract typically specifies which SPARQL queries are allowed, the frequency of data retrieval, and the specific security protocols that must be followed. It may also include clauses that restrict the distributor from using the endpoint to harvest the entire database for competitive analysis or to share it with unauthorized third parties.
If the distributor violates these access limits, the manufacturer has the right to immediately terminate the endpoint access and revoke the data license. These protective terms ensure that the manufacturer can share necessary product information with their trusted partners while fully protecting their proprietary data assets.
