Meaning
Radiation resistance in protective coatings describes the ability of a clear resin layer to maintain its clarity and chemical integrity when exposed to light for an extended period. Topcoat photostability is the physical property of a label’s outer surface that prevents it from yellowing or becoming brittle when subjected to the ultraviolet output of store lighting. This stability is necessary for ensuring that the protection provided to the sensitive dyes underneath remains effective throughout the product’s life.
The measurement tracks the change in the color and the flexibility of the coating after it has been in a light chamber. It defines the limit of the coating’s ability to protect the label from light damage.
Coating Resilience
Chemical bonds in the polymer can be broken by the energy of light, leading to a breakdown of the protective barrier. While topcoat photostability is high, the coating remains transparent and allows the scanner’s light to pass through to the print without being scattered. This ensures that the barcode remains easy to read even if the label is placed in a bright window.
If the topcoat is not stable, it will turn brown or grey, which reduces the contrast of the label and makes it look old. This failure also makes the coating more likely to crack or peel off the surface of the paper. A durable topcoat is a standard requirement for products sold in the outdoor or garden sector.
Light Resistance
Manufacturers use ultraviolet absorbers in the resin to improve the topcoat photostability of their most expensive label stocks. These chemicals catch the harmful light rays and turn them into a small amount of heat before they can damage the polymer or the dye. This protection is necessary for labels that will be used on clear packaging where the light can hit the label from both sides.
Without this protection, the image would fade and the label would lose its professional look within a few weeks of being on the shelf. The choice of which additives to use depends on the type of light the label is expected to see. Some absorbers are better at blocking sunlight, while others are designed for indoor store lights.
Product Durability
Retailers expect that the price tags and the brand labels on the goods they sell will look as good on the last day of the season as they did on the first. When topcoat photostability is low, it reflects poorly on the brand and can lead to a loss of sales. This is why the quality of the label materials is a common topic in the negotiations between the brand and the packaging supplier.
The supplier must prove that their materials have been tested and meet the standards for light resistance. If the labels fail in the field, the supplier may be forced to pay for the cost of relabeling the inventory or for the lost sales. Protecting the image of the product is the only way to ensure its success in the market.
The quality of the coating is a factor in every modern packaging design.
