Meaning
Organic chemical compounds are added to paperboard coatings to enhance whiteness by converting ultraviolet light into visible blue light. The use of triazinylaminostilbene is a standard industrial method for producing high-brightness packaging paperboard. This compound is highly effective at masking the yellow color of wood pulp.
Brightening Process
Raw wood fibers naturally absorb blue light, giving unbleached and even some bleached paperboard a slight yellowish tint. Applying triazinylaminostilbene to the board surface fills in this blue light deficit, making the substrate appear much whiter and more brilliant to the human eye. This treatment provides a neutral, high-contrast background that is essential for printing sharp images and text.
Supply Agreement
Contracts for packaging board specify the optical properties of the board to ensure consistency across different print runs. A supplier’s choice to use triazinylaminostilbene is guided by the brightness requirements of the buyer’s packaging specification. If the supplier changes the concentration or quality of this brightening agent, they risk failing the brightness checks, which can lead to rejected shipments and financial penalties.
Product Claim
Brand owners expect their packaging to retain its bright appearance under retail lights and during storage. If the paperboard fades rapidly due to poor-quality triazinylaminostilbene or incorrect application, the brand owner will file a claim for damaged merchandise. The converter and the board mill must then resolve the financial liability for the ruined inventory, which emphasizes the commercial importance of using stable, high-quality chemical additives in the manufacturing process to avoid costly product returns.
