Meaning
A commercial contract clause protects semiconductor designers from paying for defective silicon by ensuring a minimum percentage of functional dies on each manufactured wafer. Under a wafer yield guarantee, the silicon foundry agrees to replace or refund wafers that do not meet the agreed yield threshold. This guarantee shifts the risk of manufacturing failures from the design company to the foundry and stabilizes the buyer’s procurement costs.
Defect Threshold
Contracts specify the minimum yield level that the foundry must achieve, which is calculated using standard yield models. If the wafer yield guarantee is triggered because yield drops below this limit, the foundry must run a formal audit of the production line to find the cause of the defect. This threshold protects the buyer from paying for poor manufacturing runs and encourages the foundry to maintain high production standards.
If the target yield is eighty percent and the actual yield is sixty percent, the foundry must credit the buyer for the missing twenty percent of usable dies.
Financial Compensation
Foundries resolve yield issues by providing replacement wafers or offering financial credits to the buyer’s account. Because a wafer yield guarantee provides clear compensation rules, it helps semiconductor designers manage their production budgets and protect their gross margins. This compensation ensures that manufacturing defects do not cause financial distress for the design company or its distribution partners.
Testing Requirement
Both parties must agree on the test procedures used to measure the yield and determine if the guarantee has been met. When evaluating a wafer yield guarantee, test engineers must use identical test routines at the foundry and the packaging plant to avoid disputes over the results. This requirement ensures that yield measurements are accurate and consistent across the supply chain.
