Meaning
An optoelectronic reading device provides visible red light to capture linear barcode data. Operating at this specific wavelength, the 660 nm laser scanner provides high-contrast readings on standard paper and synthetic labels. It reads dark bars and light spaces by measuring reflected light, but it fails on certain red or orange substrates that reflect the beam.
Spectral Precision
Emitting light at a precise wavelength allows for uniform absorption by dark carbon-based inks. This ensures that the sensor receives a clean signal with minimal background scatter from the label.
Read Operation
A rotating polygonal mirror sweeps the light beam across the printed target at high speed. The photodiode in the device measures the varying intensity of the returned light, converting these variations into an electrical waveform. In distribution networks, this rapid sweeping enables operators to capture barcode data from items moving quickly on conveyors, reducing manual handling time and increasing throughput.
Operational Limit
Ambient light and physical distance affect the accuracy of the reading process. High levels of warehouse lighting can overwhelm the receiver, and excessive distances disperse the beam. When labels suffer from physical damage, the scanning sweep fails to register the required sequence of dark and light transitions.
