Meaning
Incremental charges added to a base price to account for fluctuations in fuel or electricity costs during the term of a supply agreement. These energy surcharges protect the margins of logistics providers and manufacturers from sudden spikes in commodity prices. They shift the risk of volatile utility markets from the producer to the buyer by using a transparent indexing method.
Calculation Basis
Determination of the additional fee relies on a public benchmark such as a national fuel price index. Most energy surcharges operate on a lag, where the price in the current month is determined by the average fuel cost of the preceding month. This delay allows for administrative processing while keeping the cost aligned with recent market conditions.
Trigger Point
Activation of the fee only occurs when prices move beyond a pre-defined neutral zone. If the market price remains within this corridor, no energy surcharges are applied to the invoice. This mechanism prevents constant minor adjustments and provides price stability for the buyer during periods of low volatility.
The width of this band is a point of negotiation in long term contracts.
Invoice Disclosure
Transparency in billing requires that the extra cost is listed as a separate line item rather than being folded into the base rate.
