Meaning
Data systems in decentralized finance rely on a game-theory approach to verify the accuracy of external information. Optimistic oracles operate on the assumption that the data provided is correct unless a participant in the network submits a formal challenge. This mechanism avoids the high cost of verifying every piece of data on the blockchain while maintaining a high level of security through financial incentives.
The scope of the system is limited to data points that can be independently verified by a third party after the fact, such as the final score of a game or the price of a stock at a specific time.
Truth Assumption
Initial reports are accepted without immediate proof to reduce the computational burden on the network. This delay allows for a more efficient flow of information in markets where disputes are rare.
Dispute Resolution
Challenges initiate a voting process among token holders to determine the correct value. When a conflict occurs, optimistic oracles require the challenger and the reporter to lock up collateral which is then awarded to the party that is proven right. This financial risk discourages the submission of false data and the filing of frivolous disputes, ensuring the system remains efficient and accurate.
Data Feed
Industrial applications use these systems to settle supply chain contracts based on delivery confirmation or temperature logs.
