Meaning
Measuring instrument located at the air intake of a refrigeration unit to monitor the temperature of the air coming back from the cargo hold. The return air sensor provides a reading of how much heat the air has gained while circulating through the shipment. It acts as a primary feedback mechanism for the cooling system to adjust its output.
This component is essential for maintaining the overall thermal stability of the container.
Thermal Feedback
System controllers compare the data from this device against the supply air temperature to calculate the cooling load. A high reading at the return air sensor suggests that the cargo is generating heat or that external insulation is failing. The refrigeration unit increases its fan speed or cooling capacity based on this delta.
Airflow Integrity
Obstructions in the cargo stowage often lead to inaccurate readings at the sensor. If air cannot circulate properly, the return air sensor might report a temperature that does not represent the core of the shipment. Correct loading patterns are required to ensure the sensor captures an accurate average.
Fault Detection
Unusual spikes in the data from this instrument often signal the onset of a mechanical problem. Rapid fluctuations can indicate a faulty thermostat or a failing sensor probe. Monitoring these outputs prevents small errors from becoming total cargo losses.
