Meaning
Pneumatic or hydraulic power units use a sliding pin and slotted arm mechanism to convert linear piston motion into rotational torque. A scotch yoke actuator is particularly effective for operating ball and butterfly valves because it produces its highest torque at the beginning and end of the stroke. This torque profile matches the high force required to break a valve seat or achieve a tight shutoff.
Torque Curve
The mechanical advantage changes as the pin moves along the slot during the rotation. Because the scotch yoke actuator generates a U shaped torque curve, it provides the maximum power where the valve experiences the most resistance.
Spring Return
Many of these units include a large internal spring to ensure the valve moves to a safe position if power is lost. The design of the scotch yoke actuator must balance the air pressure against the spring force to ensure smooth operation in both directions. This fail safe capability is a requirement for most emergency shutdown applications.
Internal Friction
Moving parts within the yoke mechanism require regular lubrication to prevent wear and ensure consistent performance. If the slide becomes dry or contaminated, the scotch yoke actuator may exhibit jerky motion or reduced output force. Proper maintenance of the guide bars and bushings is necessary for the long term reliability of the automated valve assembly.
