Meaning
Material deterioration in the sealing area of a valve occurs when the soft components are exposed to harsh process conditions or mechanical stress. Over time, seat insert degradation leads to the loss of tight shutoff and an increase in internal leakage. This issue is common in applications involving abrasive solids, high temperatures, or chemically aggressive fluids.
Wear Mechanism
Physical erosion from high velocity particles can cut paths through the seal face. When seat insert degradation is caused by chemical attack, the material may swell, harden, or dissolve. These changes alter the geometry of the seal and prevent it from making full contact with the ball or gate.
Leakage Impact
As the condition of the seal worsens, the volume of fluid passing through the closed valve increases. Detectable seat insert degradation often shows up during pressure decay tests or through acoustic monitoring of the valve body.
Material Choice
Selecting the right polymer or elastomer for the service environment can slow the rate of wear. If seat insert degradation occurs too rapidly, an engineer might specify a harder material or a metal to metal sealing system. Procurement specifications must match the material properties to the expected temperatures and pressures of the line.
