Meaning
Flow control devices that utilize elastomeric or polymeric insert rings to achieve a tight seal against a rotating spherical closure member are widely used in industrial fluid systems. A soft seated ball valve is preferred for applications where absolute, bubble-tight shutoff is required at moderate temperatures and pressures. This configuration provides a cost-effective solution for clean liquid and gas service.
Material Constraint
Thermoplastics like polytetrafluoroethylene or nylon are the standard sealing materials because of their excellent elasticity and low friction. When using a soft seated ball valve, the operational temperature is limited by the melting point and thermal stability of these plastic seats. This limitation means the valve cannot be used in high-temperature steam or furnace applications.
Operating Torque
Lower friction between the ball and the plastic seats reduces the force required to operate the valve. This low torque requirement allows for smaller, less expensive actuators to be used. This benefit reduces the overall system cost.
Media Compatibility
Abrasive slurry or fluids containing suspended solids will quickly erode or tear the plastic inserts, leading to valve failure. Utilizing a soft seated ball valve in such harsh conditions is avoided because the particulate matter becomes trapped in the soft seat, preventing proper closure and causing leaks. This compatibility limit dictates that the technology is reserved for clean, non-abrasive process lines where it delivers reliable, leak-free performance over many thousands of operational cycles.
