Meaning
Premium paperboard grades consist of chemically pulped wood fibers that have been bleached to a high white finish. Manufacturers select solid bleached sulfate for luxury packaging because it offers a clean appearance and excellent printing properties. The material is strong and provides a hygienic surface for food and medical products.
It is the highest quality grade of paperboard available in the commercial market.
Fiber Density
Chemical processing removes the lignin from the wood to create a board that is both bright and durable. The structure of solid bleached sulfate consists of a solid layer of high quality fibers rather than a mixture of different pulp types. This uniformity ensures that the material has a high tensile strength and resists tearing.
Because the fibers are long and well bonded, the board can be cut and creased into complex shapes without losing its integrity.
Coating Performance
Smooth surfaces are achieved through the application of clay or other minerals to the top of the board. When printing on solid bleached sulfate, the ink remains on the surface rather than being absorbed into the fibers. This results in sharper images and more vibrant colors than can be achieved on lower grades of board.
The coating also provides a barrier against moisture and oil to protect the contents of the package. Multiple layers of coating can be applied to create a high gloss or a matte finish depending on the design requirements.
Market Application
Luxury brands use this material to convey a sense of quality and purity to the consumer. Using solid bleached sulfate ensures that the packaging remains attractive throughout the entire distribution process.
