Meaning
Horizontal layers within a retail display fixture organize products based on their height from the floor. Each of the vertical strata in a store layout offers a different level of visibility and accessibility to the shopper. The most valuable space is usually located at eye level where consumers are most likely to notice the items.
Height Position
Bottom shelves are often used for bulk items or lower priced alternatives that do not require high visibility. Top shelves might hold specialty goods that appeal to a smaller segment of the market. Products for children are placed in the lower layers to match their line of sight.
Shopper View
Brands pay a premium for placement in the middle layers to capture the immediate attention of the walking customer. This central zone is where most impulse purchases occur. Items placed too high or too low are often overlooked entirely.
A single brand might occupy several different levels to capture different types of buyers.
Slot Value
Retailers use the different levels to manage the movement of inventory and maximize the profit per square foot. Fast moving goods are placed where they can be reached most easily to speed up the shopping process. Analyzing the sales data for each layer allows the store to optimize the product mix.
