Meaning
Time-dependent reduction of internal mechanical stress occurs in materials held at constant strain within cryogenic or ambient environments. This behavior, known as low temperature stress relaxation, gradually reduces the clamping force of bolted joints or pre-tensioned structural components. It limits the long-term stability of mechanical fasteners in space and refrigeration applications.
Mechanical Drift
Elastic strain in the material converts slowly into plastic deformation over extended periods. This conversion reduces the holding force of the assembly even when the temperature remains low. The rate of this mechanical drift depends on the initial stress level and the alloy micro-structure.
Supplier Obligation
Equipment manufacturing contracts must define the acceptable limits of force reduction for high-pressure seals. The component supplier must perform long-duration tests to verify that the low temperature stress relaxation does not compromise the sealing performance. These performance metrics must be documented in the quality compliance certificate provided with every production run.
Price Adjustment
Purchasing agreements often link the final unit price of high-performance seals to their certified long-term stress retention. A seal that demonstrates lower relaxation rates commands a higher margin due to its extended service life. If the tested relaxation rate exceeds the agreed threshold, the buyer is entitled to a pre-defined discount on the batch to offset the increased maintenance costs.
