Meaning
Hardware interface verification ensures the integrity of electrical connections between automated test equipment and integrated circuits on a wafer. Routine probe card testing identifies worn needles or damaged contact points that could lead to false failures during the sorting process. This maintenance is required to maintain high yield and prevent the destruction of expensive silicon wafers.
Interface Validation
Precision probes must align perfectly with the microscopic bond pads on the surface of the chip. The interface validation process checks the planarity and the alignment of thousands of individual pins. If the pins are not level, they may not make a consistent electrical connection with all parts of the circuit.
Electrical Connectivity
Measurement of the resistance and the signal integrity of each path confirms that the card can transmit data without distortion. Electrical connectivity of the probe card is affected by the buildup of debris from the silicon surface. Operators use specialized cleaning blocks to remove these particles and restore the performance of the pins.
When the resistance exceeds a certain limit, the card must be removed from the machine for repair or replacement. This ensures that the results of the wafer test are accurate and that good parts are not mistakenly rejected.
Maintenance Protocol
Regular intervals for inspection and cleaning are scheduled based on the number of touchdowns the card has performed. The maintenance protocol of the test facility dictates when a card should be sent for a detailed overhaul.
