Meaning
Distributed networks of small pressure-sensing ports installed on an aerodynamic surface measure the local surface pressure distribution during wind tunnel testing. This structured measurement system, known as a pressure tap array, provides detailed spatial maps of the lift and drag forces acting on the test model. The collected data is used to validate computational fluid dynamics models.
Installation Technique
Physical installation requires drilling fine holes perpendicular to the surface and routing thin tubing through the interior of the model. When a pressure tap array is designed, engineers must balance sensor density with structural integrity.
Data Acquisition
Connective tubes route the surface pressure signals to electronic pressure scanners located inside or outside the model. These scanners convert the physical pressure changes into digital signals that are recorded during the test run. Analyzing these signals allows researchers to identify areas of flow separation and shock wave formation.
Commercial Value
High-fidelity pressure maps produced by this instrumentation reduce the need for multiple design iterations. By providing a clear picture of the aerodynamic behavior, a pressure tap array allows design teams to make informed adjustments to the vehicle’s shape. This precision reduces overall development costs and accelerates the time-to-market for new aerospace products.
